The Haunting of the Old Thatch!
Talk to many of the locals and they all have their tales of the ghost that haunts The Old Thatch! There are many stories passed around but the main version is this.........
The Old Thatch used to be the gatehouse for the Uddens Mansion House way back in the 1700s. Unfortunately, the mansion house had a fire and the only item that was saved was a heavily ornate door which was brought to the gatehouse. From that day forward, the pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of an old lady, Mary, who sits in a rocking chair at table 28!
Needless to say, when you look around the pub now, you will not find table 28 as nobody wants to tempt fate! Apparently she's a friendly ghost - to those who respect the door but, it is rumoured, that anyone who harms the door comes to a sticky end. Indeed, one of the landlords who was not liked by the ghost was found at the foot of one of the pubs staircases after falling down and breaking his neck - he wasn't found for three days! Others have fled the building after an encounter with Mary never to be seen again!
The door still hangs in the pub today, it leads to nowhere but is there as a reminder and out of respect for Mary. The current owners have never had any nasty encounters but have sometimes felt a presence in certain parts of the pub. Also, the door has not been dusted for fear of damaging it and yet it remains clean and dust free!
We'll leave you to your own conclusions!
